10 good thrash bands from the 80's

I define the bands below as thrash, although some may disagree. In the 80s genres mixed into one another, and later became more pure forms of genres that we know of today, such as death metal, black, etc. That is probably why I like 80's so much, they gave a damn about what genre they played, they just played it raw and brutal.

In chronological order by release:

1) Venom - Black Metal
Utgitt 1982

Catchy metal from the early eighties. Has inspired a number of bands and genres, assome of those under.http://www.myspace.com/venomlegions

Track
1. Black Metal
2.To Hell and Back
3. Buried Alive
4. Raise the Dead
5. Theacher's Pet
6. Leave Me in Hell
7. Sacrifice
8. Heaven's on Fire
9. Countess Bathory
10. Don't Burn the Witch
11. At War with Satan

2) Bulldozer - The Day of Wrath
Utgitt 1985

Venom-inspired band from Italy. Has some really awesome treats, with surprising twists. Got the CD a few days ago and it was a "limited edition" limited to 2000 copies. Not as weird as some occult black metal bands that restrict their editions to 500 copies, but still, pretty cool.

Spor
1. The Exorcism
2. Cut-Throat
3. Insurrection of the Living Damned
4. Fallen Angel
5. The Great Deceiver
6. Mad Man
7. Whisky Time
8. Welcome Death
9. Endless Funeral

3) Onslaught - Power from Hell
Utgitt 1985

One can clearly hear the punk shine through on this release. And that's the reason I really like this album.

Spor
* The CD which I own  apparently got a few tracklisting errors, and that is why the tracklisting shown below is incorrect. Eg.: The Devil's Legion is one track and not two. I lists the tracks as they appear on my album.

1. Damnation Onslaught
2. Onslaught (Power from Hell)
3. Skull Crusher 1
4. Lord of Evil
5. Death Metal
6. Angels of Death
7. The Devils Legion part 1
8. The Devils Legion part 2
9. Steel Meets Steel
10. Skull Crusher 2
11. Witch Hunt
12. Mighty Empress

4) Whiplash - Power and Pain
Utgitt 1985

Lots of cool and fast riffs, just what makes this album fucking brutal. The band probably took its name "Whiplash" from Metallica - Kill 'Em All.

Spor
1. Stage Dive
2. Red Bomb
3. Last Man Alive
4. Message in Blood
5. War Monger
6. Power Thrashing Death
7. Stirring the Cauldron
8. Spit on Your Grave
9. Nailed to the Cross

Ps. Insanely low quality, but who cares. Check out the ambience!

5) Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Utgitt 1985

Maybe one of the BEST records I own. It's pure genius, it just can't get any better than this! Morbid Tales is fantastic as well, but this one just kicks ass from beginning till end.

Spor
1. Innocence and Wrath
2. The Usurper
3. Jewel Throne
4. Dawn of Meggido
5. Eternal Summer
6. Circle of the Tyrants
7. (Beyond the) North Winds
8. Fainted Eyes
9. Tears in a Prophet's Dream
10. Necromantical Screams

6) Possessed - Seven Churches
Utgitt 1985

Many people often misunderstand the culture of metal the way I see it, and take everything they say and express literally. Maybe not the hardcore fans though, but anyhow I strongly doubt that there were many satanists or devil worshipers among the 80-century thrashers. It was rather a riot and if not, at least a lot of fun and humor.

It's said to have defined death metal genre, look at the last track.

1. The Exorcist
2. Pentagram
3. Burning in Hell
4. Evil Warriors
5. Seven Churches
6. Satan's Curse
7. Holy Hell
8. Twisted Minds
9. Fallen Angel
10. Death Metal

7) Dark Angel - Darkness Decends
Utgitt 1986

Slayer - Reign in Blood released their album the same year as Dark Angel - Darkness Decends. If you like Slayer you will for sure like this album, fast and heavy as hell. This album has longer songs than on Reign in Blood, and is perhaps slightly more melodic.

1. Darkness Descends
2. The Burning of Sodom
3. Hunger of the Undead
4. Merciless Death
5. Death Is Certain (Life Is Not)
6. Black Prophecies
7. Perish in Flames

Haha, what energy. A little amusing that the vocalist just sings, a bit unusual to see!

8) Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Utgitt 1986

German thrash, considered as one of the big three along side Sodom and Destruction. The genre is often refered to as "teutonic thrash metal", while Dark Angel is referred to as the "bay area thrash metal" and Whiplash as "east coast thrash metal".

Strappado is one of my favorite albums and I can hand on heart say that this is one of the coolest thrash records I've ever heard. The vocals are wonderful, raw and brutal, and the production just the way it should and ought to be.
